Provost Miranda and EVP Cullinan: Spring Update #10

Note: Dated communications are archived here for reference, but may not reflect the most up-to-date information available.

Main Quad Aerial

Dear Colleagues:

As we approach the halfway point in the semester, we are blessed with warm temperatures and one of the sunnier months of March in recent memory. Here is a brief update.

By the numbers

We continue to see a moderate number of new cases. We remain mindful that new, more contagious variants of the virus are now present in our region, so continued vigilance and compliance with health and safety protocols is required.

Vaccination update

All COVID-19 vaccines currently being administered have been shown to be safe and effective, and we continue encouraging everyone to register for a vaccination as soon as they become eligible. The State of Indiana’s eligibility age is now at 40, and the State of Michigan recently lowered its eligibility to age 50. As previously mentioned, this coming Friday and Saturday, March 26 and 27, state health officials will hold daylong mass vaccination clinics for eligible Indiana residents at Notre Dame’s Compton Family Ice Arena. All appointments for this drive-through vaccination clinic have been filled.

Why upload your vaccine information

We are asking all faculty, staff, and students who have been vaccinated to upload their vaccine information here. The more information we have regarding who is vaccinated, the better understanding we have of the degree of protection present in our community. This in turn will shape our planning, policies, and procedures for at least the summer and fall. We take the security and privacy of this data very seriously. The Office of General Counsel and the Office of Information Technologies’ Information Security team completed a thorough review of the platform we are using to ensure the protection of individuals and the University.

Continued surveillance testing

Please continue to do your part to help us minimize the spread of COVID-19. We need you to remain steadfast in completing your surveillance tests given the CDC’s acknowledgement that there is more to learn about the vaccines’ effectiveness against the variants and the spread of COVID-19. In fact, given the presence of COVID-19 variants in our region, we are stepping up our “adaptive” surveillance testing program in an effort to detect any new and emerging clusters among faculty, staff, and students.

Closing thought

Crocus

In another positive development, the crocus – and other flowers – are blooming along the paths around the lakes. Thank you for all you are doing to keep our campus and our students safe and progressing toward their educational goals and aspirations.

Please remember:

  • Wear your mask
  • Practice physical distancing
  • Wash your hands frequently
  • Complete your daily health check
  • Keep your scheduled testing appointments

Yours in Notre Dame,

Marie Lynn Miranda, Provost

Shannon Cullinan, Executive Vice President
